Luís Mendes
Geographer. Guest Assistant Professor at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon (IGOT-UL) (2012 / ...). Member of the Portuguese Association of Geographers, the Portuguese Association of Political Economy, the Geography Teachers Association and the Lisbon Tenants Association, integrating since 2012 and 2018, respectively, the board of the latter two.
Since 2003, carries Permanent Researcher functions in the Centre for Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon (CEG/UL) of IGOT-UL, in which has developed research in the fields of Urban Studies (notably gentrification and urban regeneration), Geographical Education and Teaching of Geography.
He is a technical and scientific consultant in the Deputy Chamber of the City Council of Lisbon, and occasionally in the National Parliament. Commissioner at the Technical Housing Commission of the Association of Architects, body that has a seat on the government's National Housing Council. Member of the Lisbon Municipal Housing Council. He is part of the Housing Policy Working Group from the International Union of Tenants (IUT).
Author of more than two hundred and a half titles: numerous papers, presentations, book chapters, books, technical opinions and reports, in addition to other publications in the area of research topics mentioned above. Co-advisor of several master's theses and internship reports. Member of the research team for more than a dozen research projects. Current co-coordinator of the project "Care(4)Housing - A care through design approach to address housing precarity in Portugal" (PTDC/ART-DAQ/0181/2021), funded by national funds through the FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. He is a reviewer, evaluator, and referee for more than two dozen national and international scientific journals in the fields of Geography, Urban Studies, and Geography Didactics, such as: Urban Studies; Urban Geography; Housing Policy Debate; Housing Studies; Tijdschrift voor Economische en Sociale Gegrafie; European Urban and Regional Studies; Environment and Planning A; Finisterra; Portuguese Journal of Geography; Geographical Didactics; Interuniversity Journal of Teacher Training, etc.
His work has been recognized and cited in the national and international media where he has a frequent presence. It was also awarded with the Amilcar Patrício Award 2005 by the Portuguese Association of Geographers, and more recently received the Diploma of Merit, recognition award for activities with relevance to the community, for the three-year period 2016/2017/2018 awarded by the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon; and more recently awarded the Prize for Best Scientific Paper 2021 in Human Geography and Spatial Planning, awarded by CEG-UL. He has also worked in the last five years as an activist in the social movement Morar em Lisboa.
